For decades, law enforcement officers and military personnel have been wearing hard armor vests to prevent fatal injuries in the event of gunfire. Vests provide protection from bullet fire and other projectiles while still being lightweight and affordable for both police and military personnel. The development of protective vests such as the vests designed by Dickies and the bullet resistant vests worn by soldiers and police officers around the world has been a challenge to scientists and engineers for many years. Vests that stop shooting are one of the most significant breakthroughs made to help police and military personnel protect themselves from injuries and death in the line of duty. In order for these vests to work effectively, it is necessary to make them extremely durable and resistant to bullet penetration.

Hard Armor explained. To prevent high caliber gun shots, modern body armor manufactures have developed metal and ceramic plates which fit snugly in front of an average body armor panel to prevent high caliber ammo from penetrating the material. Hard armor plates are typically used in tandem with other protective materials like bullet proof vests and training apparel in order to maximize the amount of protection provided against high caliber ammunition. Fragment size is another important feature to consider when purchasing hard armor and vests. High caliber fragmented rounds can cause incredibly serious injuries or fatalities in the event of an accident. Because of this, law enforcement agencies and military personnel require protective vests that have extremely high fragility properties.

I Was Just Testing – Fragmentation Resistance Test Results of IVC Hard Armor Plates on M16A1 Carbine projectiles indicate the plate will withstand impacting two typical velocity rifles. Impacting one of these weapons at one hundred feet per second will cause the plate to shatter into hundreds of tiny pieces, preventing the projectiles from causing damage to anything around it. A similar test performed on an aluminum alloy plate shown to be capable of withstanding velocity increases of twelve thousand feet per second revealed that the same plate was perfectly capable of withstanding twelve thousand foot per second impacts from high velocity rifles. This is particularly noteworthy since law enforcement and military personnel often encounter violent events wherein violent projectiles are fired at them from close range.
